The Immensity of Personality and Activities of A. N. Leontiev
(February 05, 1903 – January 21, 1979)

The article is devoted to the 115th anniversary of the birth of Aleksei Nikolaevich Leontiev (1903–1979), the classic of Russian psychology of the 20th century. The author believes that the activity and personality of A. N. Leontiev must be considered in the context of an era that largely determined the style of his scientific language and explained the difficulties in understanding the texts of his writings. His personality traits and diverse areas of his organizational, scientific, pedagogical and social activities are reconstructed. A theoretical analysis of the basic notions and problems of the general-psychological theory developed by him is given, its successive links with the cultural-historical theory of L. S. Vygotsky are emphasized, its qualitative features are revealed in contrast to classical psychology. The article shows the connections of Leontiev's theory with the disciples and followers' works, the formation of a large scientific tradition – cultural-historical activity psychology. The author expresses her confidence in the inexhaustible resources and possible prospects for the further development of the activity theory in the 21st century.
