The Fate of Meaning and the Meaning of the Fate

I consider the dynamics of meanings in its connection with the categories of freedom and conscience from the standpoint of existential philosophy. I describe possible positions in understanding of life meanings related to (1) distinguishing or not distinguishing life meanings in relation to their “correctness,” as well as (2) in relation to the sources of their “correct” dynamics. The projections of these distinctions to the psychotherapy are considered. It is shown that the distinction of type (1) leads to the need to recognize the structures of bad faith and their role in the semantic design of life, and the distinction of type (2) introduces the therapist to the problems of free will and requires clarification of important philosophical questions, which are introduced and illustrated in the article using the texts of theologians and philosophers from Augustine to Heidegger.

Keywords: meaning; meaning dynamics; fate; free will; conscience; existential approach; logos; logotherapy; existential analysis
